Forestry Machine Cab Mounting Cylinder Pin Removal
This timber harvesting machine was suffering from a worn
spherical bearing in the lower end of a hydraulic cylinder which controls
the levelling system for the cab and crane. The decision to replace the
bearing during a routine service period was taken. The cylinder mounting
pin was found to be very tight (a 30 ton jack couldn’t move it.).
The obvious answer would have been to drill out the pin using a heavy duty
drill; however access in line with the centre of the pin was extremely tight.
The metal disintegration machine was used, fitted with an “Offset” arm
to split the pin along its axes so allowing it to be driven out from
the cylinder and the machine’s chassis. In this case, access was the
main problem but this method can also be used when the pin is made from
very hard materials, where drilling can be difficult.
