Brighton Victorian Fountain on site machining

Foretract proudly took part in restoring the historic Victorian fountain in Brighton, built in 1846 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 27th birthday. The project called for our expertise in on-site machining of the bowl flanges, helping the fountain regain its former glory.

Over the years, the fountain had experienced significant settling. This has lead to uneven water flow over the rim of the cast iron bowls. This issue not only detracted from the fountain’s aesthetic appeal but also hindered its functionality as a central feature of the public space.

Cast Iron Welding Services, approached us with the task of machining the bowl flanges to restore proper alignment. Our skilled technicians employed advanced techniques, utilising a laser level mounted on a flange facing machine. This setup let us track the bowl rim—where water flows over the edge—and provided a precise datum point. Using this information, we adjusted the facing machine to cut on the same plane, ensuring a seamless finish.

Thanks to our combined efforts, the restored fountain is now back in operation. It features new pumps and a stunning LED lighting that enhance its beauty. Water flows gracefully and evenly over the rim of both bowls, revitalising this cherished landmark and bringing joy to both locals and visitors alike.
