Emergency machining on North link ferry rudder
We were called by North Link Ferries to their vessel in drydock in Rosyth to carry out some emergency machining. When fitting the rudder back onto the shaft the large nut had picked up on the threads, therefore making the threads unusable.
Due to the tight dry docking schedule, we mobilized to arrive on Saturday morning.
We decided the best course of action was to machine the damaged bottom 4 threads away. This meant there was clearance for the nut to slide over the top and start on the clean threads above.
We lifted a flange facing machine onto the job with assistance from the dockyard slingers. To enable us to do this, we isolated the cross feed and used the depth feed only, manually increasing the cross feed for each cut. See how we did it here!
The end result was a smooth finish on the bottom of the rudder shaft, which led into the start of the good threads.
Carrying out the machining swiftly allowed the engineering team on-site to continue their work on time. This helped ensure the vessel would return to the Scottish Isles as scheduled. The result was happy customers and satisfied islanders!
